They will not tell me how they are choosing who gets the licenses, just saying they like to experiment with different kinds of promotions. Update: Blizzard has confirmed to me that yes, this is actually legitimate and they're giving people Wings of Liberty licenses for free.

If Blizzard does return to the RTS space, it seems more likely they might do so with WarCraft, not StarCraft.īut I’ve had a lot of fun with StarCraft II over the years, and if you’ve suddenly been granted it for free, I highly suggest you check it out. It’s unlikely that we’re going to see another StarCraft II expansion with the overarching story of the three races complete, and out of all Blizzard’s priorities, I don’t imagine StarCraft III is in the cards for a very, very long time, if ever. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up the game myself, but it seems there have been major overhauls to the arcade, and I’ve just now heard about these new co-op challenge missions for the game that sound like a lot of fun, and something that would be just up my alley, given how they’re similar to the campaign. Even if you’re not into pulse-pounding multiplayer juggling macro and micro, the campaign of Wings of Liberty in particular is stellar, and I thought I got my money’s worth out of both expansions for their respective campaigns alone. While both StarCraft and the RTS genre in general may be fading compared to where they were a decade or more ago, StarCraft II does have a lot going for it.
Regardless, at the very least, it’s worth opening your client and checking to see if you’ve got a golden ticket. It could be random, it could be tied your past purchase or play history, but I’m trying to figure out what’s going on from Blizzard themselves. So far, we don’t know what criteria, if any, you have to meet in order to snag a free copy of Wings of Liberty.
